Our story begins as just an ordinary day. Chloe Moore, who manages a small bookstore of rather... hard to find books, finds herself in an interesting situatoin when two men enter her store. At first she doesn't think much of it until another man enters and things start to get strange. The first customers suddenly attack the newer one. However, this last customer is no ordinary customer. In a brilliant display, he gets rid of the two others in literally a puff of smoke.
He introduces himself as Dante Rossi, a demon hunter, to Chloe. At the same time he calls for some aid, explaining to Chloe she's not going to remember any of this. The person Dante calls isn't actually a person, nor who he wanted there, he ends up with the archangel Gabriel... let's just say Dante and Gabriel don't get along....
Dante requests that Gabriel make Chloe forget what happened, Gabriel refuses. Why? Because he says she may be useful to Dante. So they end up explaining what was going on, the two men were demons, Dante is a 400 year old man who doesn't look a day over 30, and the demons he banished.... they made their way back.
This time Gabriel banishes them, kills them actually, for good.
To explain Gabriel's position, he says that he currently isn't in grace, not fallen, but he's not allowed in heaven. He briefly introduces Dumah, an angel in a similar position. It's here that we get to meet Lucifer, Prince of Hell, who, isn't in a good mood with Gabriel messing around with his demons. Lucifer gives Dante and Gabriel a warning and then is off by request.
Dante leaves for New York City.
Uzziel, Gabriel's second in command comes into the story here. He follows Gabriel in grace and out, there to protect his master and give Gabriel company as well. They fear that the bookstore is somehow drawing demons to her, but find after some searching, it's not the store, they surmise it's Chloe.
Misha, a friend of Chloe's comes in at this point and is reluctantly thrust into all this, deciding it's not safe to leave her alone with Gabriel and Uzziel.
Gabriel and Uzziel escort the two humans to Chloe's apartment, where they get a visit from Michael who tells Gabriel that it is in fact Gabriel himself who will be watching over Chloe until they find out why the demons were after her. This doesn't go over well with Gabriel.
Chloe goes to bed, the angels hang out in the kitchen, Misha attempts to sleep on the couch, however, is interupted by a knock on the door. Yet another angel, this one is Eloa, has been sent to help Gabriel in all of this.
Gabriel and Eloa have an interesting first meeting in which Eloa forms many interesting opinions on Gabriel and Uzziel, all of them turning out to be correct. It begins an interesting relationship between the angels as they are an unlikely bunch to be friends, but they get along very well.
Meanwhile, Lucifer is sulking in a coffee shop after Dumah had exchanged a few words with him. He's joined by Azazel, who is resentful of Lucifer being Prince of Hell and shows it, and Valefar, a duke of hell that accedently walks into this situation and ends up recruited into Lucifer's schemes. Lucifer's scheme? To get back at Gabriel by kidnapping Uzziel. Azazel's interest in it? To find out why Chloe is so special she has an archangel guarding her. Valefar's inerest? Killing something.
The plot is hatched and the deal struck, Azazel and Valefar will get Uzziel and while Gabriel is distracted trying to get Uzziel back, they can go after Chloe.
The next morning, Eloa, Uzziel and Gabriel all join Misha and Chloe at the store. It starts quietly, customers of the very human kind, Hailie and Catylina come along to do some shopping, but Valefar and Azazel have other plans and the store erupts in violence adn broken glass as hordes of demons attack the store, Valefar fight Gabriel, and Azazel kidnaps Uzziel.
After the attack, Raphael is called in to help heal the wounds, and the angels find out what happened to Uzziel when in a flash, Gabriel sees where he is, in hell. Also they find Catylina isn't an average human, she can see what the angels are.
After Haile (who is made to forget the incident) and Catylina (who doesn't forget) leave, Valefar begins torturing Uzziel. Gabriel, being closely tied to Uzziel, feels all his pain.
The only good that comes of it is that Gabriel sees something through Uzziel's eyes. He sees the demons he killed the day before, rather an impression of them, and finds out who they were after. It was Catylina, not Chloe, they were just a day early.
So Gabriel decides to go to hell and get Uzziel. Eloa decides to come along.Even though Gabriel tries to talk her out of it, he lets her come anyway.
On the journey through hell they meet Cornelius, a fallen angel, who really despises hell, almost as much as he despises heaven. HAting his position in hell and not wishing to return to heaven, his goal is to get out of hell, and the angel out of grace is a perfect oppertunity. Allowing himself to be bound to Gabriel, so not to harm Gabriel in any way, he goes to Lucifer's palace with Eloa and Gabriel and helps free Uzziel.
After bringing Uzziel back to earth, callign on Raphael again, and leaving Uzziel in Raphael's care in Chloe's bookstore, Gabriel and Cornelius go to a park where they run into Enoch, yeah the prophet,, who was sent down to earth for a reason he's not willing to speak of. And Eloa is off getting Catylina.
When Catylina and Eloa arrive, Gabriel strives to fill in Catylina on what is happening to her. In order to save her from going crazy by the hands of hell, they want to help her understand her gift. She has a special sight, and hell doesn't want her to use it, so Gabriel unlocks the power with in her.
After taking Catylina home, Gabriel, Eloa, and Cornelius have no idea what to do. Bored and wandering, and Cornelius threatening to annoy Gabriel, they decide to visit a club.
The club proves to only be one trouble after another. Eloa gets drunk, followed by Gabriel getting tipsy. Gabriel get Eloa to dance with him only to end up kissing her. She gets more drunk and tells him she loves him, later kissing him. The uncomfortable situations get put aside, chalked up to drunkeness and Gabriel shows Eloa what a rambling messenger of God keeps up his sleeve, eerr, more like inside his coat pocket. From lighters, to 60 year old gum to the crown of the Prince of First Heaven. What seems to be entering into a comfortable, yet strange converastion gets interupted by a human boy trying to hit on Eloa.
Well, let's say that doesn't end up well, to keep Gabriel from killing the kid, Eloa sets fire to the club. In the end they fix the damage, but decide to leave and sober up in the bookstore with Rapahel and Uzziel.
Plans are interupted, yet again, as Azazel and Valefar have snuck into Catylina's house and by order of Lucifer try to kill her.
Catylina however, has a way to call Gabriel if she needs him, and they instantly respond and save her from certain death. In the middle of this, Azazel steals away with Cornelius, and Lucifer takes it into his own hands to dispose of Gabriel and Valefar gets beat up by Eloa. However, Gabriel calls on Raphael.. again, and they manage to banish Lucifer and Valefar and save Catylina and Hailie.
