Michael (AKA Mithra in Zoroaism) originally took a backseat to Gabriel. In fact often times in Hebrew lore he is considered second to Gabriel but being protector of Isreal, he really has more prominance that Gabriel.
Michael is the masculine. His planet is Mars, you kow, the symbol for male.

sword: Such a masculine symbol... (it's an air symbol though), it's power and rightousness

lance and shield: Pretty much the same here, it's a smiting evil foes thing. I think that the "flaming sword" replaced the lance when usage of the sword was more prevelent.

scales (shown weighing souls): Mithra and thusly Michael, weigh the souls of the dead, he decides who has lived well and deserves to continue to heaven.

millstone: The mutual converse of human society (it's the only meaning I can find! I don't get it!)

piercing dragon or devil: This one is easy, Michael slays the dragon in the apacalypse

banner charged with a dove: This is basicly a battle oriented symble, all banners usually are, basicly it represents the Holy Warrior.

symbolic colors orange or gold.
Gold is power, orange strength

I have to admit, Michael is far more straight forward than Gabriel, the sword being a pretty much accepted symbol of masculinity, as is mars, and the sun, all relating to Michael. In christianity, Michael's element is fire, which is also masculine. In wiccan, the direction of south corosponds with fire and masculinity too.
I wish I could dig deeper into symbolic references like I did Gabriel, but it isn't there with Michael. Michael has pretty much stood the test of time and did not mute into something else over the ages (Even though St George took his slaying the dragon claim to fame, poor Michael).
You can probably say it's safe to say Michael can be connected with all the old male gods involving protection and war. He is really archtypical in that respect that he represents very masculine aspects.
