Book 2/Chapter 10: Millennium (part 2: To Right What You Have Suffered) |
Lead | ||
|
Tom sat in his dark apartment, nursing a glass of warm milk trying to make himself sleepy. It wasn't working. He sighed, listening to sound of the city
traffic and watching the clock as it got later and later.

Gabriel stood outside Tom's apartment door a moment trying to guess whether Tom was awake or not. Deciding that he was, he carefully turned the knob,
negating the lock, and carefully opening the door.
" I'm saying nothing for the good of myself;
but I'm still talking and you're not listening" |

Tom's attention suddenly drew to the door as the knob was turning. He was certain he had locked it, he'd lived in the city all his life, it was natural
habit to always lock the door. Quietly he reached over to the end table and picked up his gun and trained it at the door. "I'd stop right there,
I'm a cop with a gun." He called out to whomever it was about to enter.

"Feel free to shoot, Thomas." Gabriel said as he heard Tom's warning.
" I'm saying nothing for the good of myself;
but I'm still talking and you're not listening" |

"Gabriel?" Tom asked not even lowering the gun.

"Know any one else who can completely ignore locks?" Gabriel asked pushing the door open a bit, silloetted in the hall light in comparrison to
Tom's dark apartment. "Besides Michael and Eloa..."

"Well, I didn't know you could." Tom pointed out as Gabriel opened the door. "Damn, Gabriel, I could have shot you." Tom suddenly
realized he had cursed in front of Gabriel; he frowned. "Err... sorry, didn't mean to swear."

"Eh, swear all you want, I do it all the fucking time." Gabriel said slipping off his coat and dropping it in a chair. "And yes, you could have
shot me, doesn't mean you'd have hurt me." He pointed out.

Tom looked a bit shocked by the angel swearing. In the end he ended up just laughing though. "How did you get here, since niether you or Dante or Eloa can
drive?" He asked as he motioned for Gabriel to find a place to sit.

Gabriel frowned. "I know how to drive... just that no one will let me. I took a cab." He said. "They
say I'm a bad driver. Do you remember that scene from The Great Gatsby where Nick says to Jordan 'You're a rotten driver, either you ought to be
more careful or you oughtn't to drive at all.'? Raphael said that to me when he and I went driving once..." Gabriel trailed off as he sat down on
the other end of the couch from Tom. "I don't think I'm a bad driver..."

Tom shook his head. "I never read it." He said. "If you don't mind me being blunt, why are you here?"

"I prefer blunt." Gabriel said. "Michael sent me to talk to you."

Tom looked confused. "Why?"

"You ask too many questions." Gabriel pointed out. "He sent me because he was concerned about you."

"Michael is concerned about me? Why?" Tom asked.

"Because..." Gabriel began. "Because we can tell that all this confuses you. Do you believe in God, Thomas?"

"Yeah." Tom said looking downward. "I have to admit, though, my faith in has always been abstract. I believe in God, yes, but I never believed
in angels... now I look stupid." He sighed. "But I live in a world that is very tangible. God was never tangible until I met you and Eloa." He
looked back up at Gabriel in the dim light. "All this is crazy, angels and demons... err, fallen angels, a guy that's over 400 years old and three
angels hanging out."

Gabriel nodded. "And that's why I'm here." He said. "You're confused, abstract things in a tangible world, creatures and events that
defy logic. You're a cop, your mind doesn't work well with things that defy your logic."

"Why did Michael send you and not come himself?" Tom asked, changing the question; not on purpose, but out of habit on something he was uncomfortable
with.

Gabriel rolled his eyes at the question. "Too many questions..." He mumbled. "He sent me because I am the archangel Gabriel, Heaven's
Messenger, he's delivering a message... sort of. I am the Messenger, the vessel which delivers your words to those who need to hear them. Now, I may be at
a slight disadvantage at the moment, but your confusion, your fears, your questions on the existence of God and angels, I'm here to relay that, though,
honestly, it won't get far right now, however, I usually end up having to answer it all my self any way, as I said, Michael feels I'm the best with
words, even if those words are just emotions and faith.
"And Michael always felt I was better with words because of that... and better with emotions than he is. His job is to plan battles, I get to tell people stuff. But you're avoiding the problem..." He stopped a bit abruptly.
" I'm saying nothing for the good of myself;
but I'm still talking and you're not listening"

"Ok, ok, I'm avoiding the problem..." Tom agreed. "It's fightening, yes, and I don't know how to deal with it. I mean, I just told
you I didn't believe in you... and there is things going on in places I will never see that are directly affecting the world I do see."
